Friday afternoon Thom, Lucy and I went down to
the Beach Party Bar for a little lunch and
beer. We had some good food while enjoying the Mediterranean breezes in the
shade of the overhead thatch roof. Also had some the usual Damm beer. Damm being
the local beer company in Calella, which makes Estrella beer. They seem to
be the only draft beer available in the bars of Calella. While
Thom and Lucy took in some sun down on the beach along with one of the local dogs
(or maybe a small horse), I continued to take in the shade with more beer and
took some pictures of a group of rockabillies at another table. They seemed to
be wearing motorcycle gang colors but as I found out later rockabilly fans over
here form their own groups with distinctive colors. Here's some shots of the
Tennessee Jailbirds and the great tattoos on one of the guys. The slogan on his
left arm is "My Life Is A Race With The Devil".
After the beach we checked out the town some more and tried a
new restaurant for dinner. When we were seated I noticed that Phil and Lynette
Morgan and the rest of the Blackwater Valley Boys were having their dinner in
the same restaurant. Then it was time to head back to the hotel and get ready
for the opening night of the Screamin' Festival at the Llobet Fabrica. (pictured
to the sides) It's a huge old factory and warehouse that's perfect for holding
an event like this.
The Bands
The Foggy Mountain Rockers (and
the Foggy Mountain Rockettes) (Germany)
I'd already heard them the last two nights down at the
La nit De Magot, but I could have heard them every night without getting tired
of them. They are a great high-energy rockin' band that really get the crowd up
on their feet.
 Lynette
Morgan and the Blackwater Valley Boys (England)
This was the band that really made me want to come
over to the Screamin' Festival. I was a big fan of her earlier band, The
Tennessee Rhythm Riders, and wanted to see how they sounded now. I can tell you
I wasn't disappointed! They still swing with the best of the early western
bands. It was like being back at the Dreambowl listening to Rose Maddox when I
was a teenager.
 The
Jets (England)
Another group that's been around for years that I
hadn't heard before now but will certainly be checking for in the future.
 Cari
Lee And The Saddle-ites (U.S.A.)
I first heard Cari Lee in 1999 when she opened for the
Tennessee Rhythm Riders at DeMarco's 23 Club in San Francisco. I've been a fan
of hers ever since but I always have to fly out of Oregon to hear her. Hopefully
one of these days she'll make an appearance here in Portland.
 Cari
Lee and Lynette Morgan
Cari
Lee and Lynette did a duet of "Wish I Was a Single Girl Again"
 Riley
McOwen And The Sleazy Rustic Boys (Sweden)
Really hot rockabilly from the North!
 The
People
The crowd was often as entertaining as the bands.
Despite the language barrier it was easy to get photos. Just hold up the camera
and people would pose for it. Besides a lot of them spoke much better English
than I did Spanish or German or Dutch. I sometimes found that the hardest ones to
understand were the British. That London accent is hard to follow after both of
us had a few beers. Looking at them now I realize that almost all of them are of
beautiful women. What can I say? As an older male I'm no longer active in the
chase but I still enjoying looking. If anyone wants a larger version of a photo
or would like names added to them, send me an e-mail at sfrederic@qwest.net El

On the steps outside
Last
picture at 3am, half an hour after the last band has finished and the house
lights came up. After I took this picture Thom and I went down to La Nit De
Magot for the follow-up party. I didn't get any pictures of it since I'd filled
up the compact flash cards by then and didn't get back to the hotel to download
them into the PowerBook. La Nit De Magot was hot, smoky, and crowded again and I
had a great time until we finally left at around 6am.
